JazzTM is a real challenge when it comes to writing the next morning after the first day of the festival. It’s not due to lack of sleep or inspiration, far from it, the atmosphere here is offering a lot of great moments to fill up your paper (or screen). Usually the problem is choosing the right angle, the perfect subject, the one character that managed to impress and entertain thousands of people present in the festival square.
This year is different. The first day brought to the stage the jazz wonder from the UK, the 22 years old Jacob Collier, the one man band-play all the instruments without any problems-add some voice and innovation-make an amazing video and stage show genius that impressed jazz legends way sooner than he did it to us. I knew coming here that his show will be something special, but I had no idea what the young protege is capable to do even out of his sacred music room where he plays with sounds like they are some kind of play-dough.
You would think a 22 year old that rehearses, learns and creates music close to 24 hours a day can’t handle audiences made out of thousands of people, but it’s not the case. Collier has the same freedom on the stage as he has at home, the public only helping him to understand that what he does brings that small, but utterly necessary feeling of wonder. His music is unique, his jazz is a point of meeting (and melting) for multiple genres rather then a standard. His ability to play any instrument (and vocals) gives him an incredible freedom, provokes him to try and create a diverse collection of songs. And if that is not enough, his passion for video content only adds to the show, taking it one step further – from the one-man-band jazz music show to a multimedia universe that only gets bigger and better by the minute.
His presence at JazzTM came at the perfect time; First show of his European tour in the same day as the release of his first album – In My Room – a real treat for the festival audience. Big day for the 22 year old, huge for us. You don’t get to see a young musical genius on stage that often. Especially one that has a fan-base among Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea.
Crazy, amazing guy this Jacob, with a huge future ahead and I am glad I can say I was there for the release of his first album.
