Yesterday was a hot day in Timișoara, as the sun shined over the city all day long and fired up the entire atmosphere. But there’s a cure for that. Parks – with trees to keep us in the shadows, green grass as a cozy alternative to those pesky chairs and clean(er) air to breath as you relax while running from the hot sunshine. But during JazzTM, this entire setup is not just a regular, every day, normal way to pass the time, but the stage for more talented musicians and jazz concerts.
For the first time in 4 years, JazzTM added another two stages to the main one, and placed them in green, open parks, so people can spend their afternoons in healing, cooling sounds of jazz. Young, amazing artists filled up the music spots and people came to listen to their music. An idea that will, for sure, take off and become a regular setup for the festival.
As the concerts take place in the same time on both of the stages, I could only see half of the bands present in the second day of the festival and I don’t have any regrets. I started the jazzy day at 4PM with Petra Acker, an amazing romanian singer that manages to connect with the public in a matter of seconds and then fascinate with her voice, lyrics and musical influences of groove, funk and soul. Voice, guitar and backing vocals from the talented Britta Seidner and the concert is bound to be good. Add the cool shadows of the trees and you have a great start for an entire day of live jazz.
Following Petra on the stage was my friend A-C Leonte and Tavi Scurtu (drums) with their intriguing music project (and new album, available in Romania with the music magazine Sunete) Angel minus Wings. With a great, balanced combo of jazz and electro, her new album sends you traveling through a multitude of sounds, different worlds and feelings, a trip that is well worth taking. Her view of jazz is always a refreshing experience and her vocal skills just add to the mix. Tavi, a great drummer, is the ideal match for the project, as their connection makes the concert fly by.
Last concert before the main stage shows was Luiza Zan’s. I haven’t seen her in a while but I knew her show is going to be amazing. Original, fit for everybody, her music is a pleasure to listen to in the middle of a park, even if the sun is shining a bit stronger than usual. Luiza’s great voice was matched here by a great band and together they managed to take us on a trip around her world. Her new album, Heritage, puts on music the intimate story of Luzia’s family and ancestors and it is a fabulous one. Filled with musical surprises, from traditional romanian sounds to vocal improv, Heritage is sure an album to be acquired for ulterior and repeated listening.
The third day of the festival (and last) will bring on to the park stages five other names and styles. What an amazing lineup for the fourth edition of the best urban jazz festival in Romania. Thousands are present every day to listen the great names JazzTM brings on it’s stages and the bands are not disappointing anyone.
